Welcome to the Hearst Museum

Welcome to the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology. Phoebe A. Hearst’s original vision for the Museum was “as a great educator” dedicated to “the dissemination of knowledge among the many” and to “giving the people of California every educational advantage.” After more than a century of service, we continue to be guided by that vision.

Through ongoing integration of multiple perspectives and the active stewardship of global archaeological, biological and ethnographic collections, the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology supports scholarly and community-based research and provides exhibitions, educational experiences and cultural programs that strengthen and connect the communities of UC Berkeley and the Bay Area.

The Hearst Museum is a place where visitors gain a deeper understanding of diverse responses through time and across cultures to humanity’s fundamental questions, challenges and opportunities.

The Museum's gallery is temporarily closed for renovation. However, most of the collections are available for teaching and research. For more information about the work that will be underway during this period please follow this link.
