K-12 Class Visits
The Hearst Museum is a unique resource for K-12 teachers. As a field trip destination, our exhibits offer students the opportunity to get a first hand look at material collections they have learned about in class. Whether taking a self-guided visit, participating in a docent-led tour, or exploring the collections online, find out what the right fit for your class is.
Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Schedule a field trip focusing on Ancient Egypt for your 6th grade class
- Plan a self-guided visit to the Gallery, no reservation needed for groups of 20 and under
- Request a guided tour, free of charge for Title I K-12 educators and their students
- Select objects for your students to view during a behind-the-scenes collections visit
- Create a research assignment using our Collections Portal
Online Collections Portal
The Hearst Museum’s online Collections Portal is a great way for students to virtually explore objects from around the world, and throughout history.
Start by exploring the overviews of each collection and checking out some featured objects. Then, create your own creative assignment to get students searching for themselves.
Here are some examples to get you started:
- Have students “curate” their own exhibit by selecting and researching objects, and then writing their own exhibit labels.
- Encourage students to use museum objects as primary resources in research papers.
- Select one object for students to study closely, ask questions about, sketch, or be inspired by.
