The Phoebe Hearst Society

The Phoebe Hearst Society celebrates the Museum’s founding patron and namesake.
Her life. Her legacy.

Phoebe Apperson Hearst, the Museum’s Founder

Phoebe Hearst, first female Regent of the University of California, was passionate about creating life-long learning opportunities for all.* Perhaps this was because as a young woman she dreamed of becoming a teacher and escaping the parochial constraints of her modest Missouri upbringing.

A force for civic inclusion and the public good, not only did Mrs. Hearst lead the call to found an anthropology museum at UC Berkeley, but she sponsored archaeological projects for the Museum in California, Florida, and internationally.

When imagining Phoebe Hearst’s day-to-day existence, you might picture her in a hospitable salon environment holding forth or listening intently to original thinkers discussing hot topics of her day. We want to capture the essence of those salons and bring back the age of conversation, with a modern day twist.

Accessible at various levels of investment, the Phoebe Hearst Society offers patrons the opportunity to engage with the Museum in a variety of unique and rewarding ways. The program runs on a 24-month renewable basis and speaks to our guiding principles of discovery, collaborative community-building, and encouraging people to explore unfamiliar or even uncomfortable ideas.

*   To become a donor to the Society, please note that your first gift must be $1,000 or more, and may be directed to any of the Museum’s funds: restricted or discretionary. Gifts to the Museum’s Director’s Big Ideas Fund (an unrestricted fund) support the Museum across its many functions and are designated at the director’s discretion. In the spirit of Phoebe Hearst, your support serves the greater good by helping the Museum activate “the dissemination of knowledge among the many,” not just for the few.
