Phoebe Hearst envisioned the museum as the cultural cornerstone of one of the world’s leading research institutions —“a great educator” of the people of California. As a teacher herself, she embraced the idea that resources and facilities should be made available to the public in order to enhance education in multiple ways.
Today, the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology is the oldest of its kind in the Western United States. The Museum’s diverse collections – nearly four million objects spanning almost two million years – include the largest anthropological collection in the West and the largest and most comprehensive Native Californian collection in the world.
Because the Museum is affiliated with a major research university, its works are studied and supported by faculty and researchers worldwide. This expansive body of knowledge is made available to the general public of all ages through exhibitions, educational programs, and tours.
