Use of Hearst Museum Collections
The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum collections and facilities are available to U.C. Berkeley faculty for teaching purposes. Classes of up to twenty students meet to view objects in the Museum's classroom (Kiriwina Cove) in the collections area, in the exhibition galleries, and in cases in the lobby. Classes can be scheduled to meet weekly, periodically, or on a one-time basis. Accommodations for larger classes can made with advanced notice. Because space is limited, we ask that you schedule to meet in these Museum areas only when you will be using objects from the collections.

Class visits are scheduled prior to or at the beginning of each semester on a first come, first served basis. Once classroom space has been requested and confirmed, faculty members are asked to select the objects and provide object lists to the appropriate Museum staff person. We ask that you do this well in advance of your class sessions, to allow ample time for staff to move the artifacts from storage and prepare the layouts for class-use. Artifact selection is done in cooperation with Museum staff. Pieces that have been deemed to be too fragile or unstable for classroom use will not be pulled and displayed for such use. A Museum staff person will be present in the classroom or gallery while collections are being used.

Kiriwina Cove-Museum Classroom
This classroom space is located in Room 20A in the collections storage area of the Museum. Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The room is furnished with chairs, a padded table, slide projector, and screen, and can accommodate a maximum of 15 people.

Museum Lobby cases
A secure case in the lobby of the Museum is available for short-term teaching displays of artifacts.

Exhibition Galleries
Classes can be scheduled to meet in the exhibition galleries on Monday and Tuesday when the Museum is closed to the public. Selected artifacts can be brought up to the galleries on these days. Faculty is also encouraged to utilize artifacts on display in the rotating and ongoing exhibits. Object lists for our current exhibits are available to faculty upon request. Class visits to view the exhibitions can be scheduled during regular Museum hours: Wed-Sun, 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Contact Lisa Hart, Receptionist at 642-3682 or pahma@berkeley.edu.
