At the time of its publication, Pomo Indian Basketry was the most complete and detailed study of a single Native American basketry tradition. Among its contents are sections devoted to material, techniques, forms, and designsthe principal subject of Barrett's research. This reprint edition is supplemented by an early essay by Barrett on Pomo basketry designs and a summary essay by Barrett's teacher, Alfred Kroeber, on the place of Pomoan basketry in Native California.
Pomo scholar Sherrie Smith-Ferri has contributed "The Human Faces of Pomo Indian Basketry," a heavily illustrated introduction that reviews Barrett's early life and research. Drawing on a wide range of information, she has been able to identify the human sources of Barrett's collections and informationa community of talented Pomoan basket weavers. Smith-Ferri (Dry Creek Pomo/Bodega Miwok), director of the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah, California, earned her doctorate (Anthropology, University of Washington) on Pomoan baskets.
