Statement by the New Interim Director
at the Phoebe A. Hearst
Museum of Anthropology,
C. Judson King

I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, with its distinguished and extensive collections.  My principal goal during my time with the Museum is to set up working relationships, structures and approaches that will secure and enhance the future of the Museum.

One of my most primary objectives is to establish effective and useful modes of interaction and working relationships with the various constituencies of the Museum, especially the native tribes of California.  Our constituents have important knowledge and insights to give to us, and we intend to build further the services and benefits that we can give back to them.  This includes making the NAGPRA repatriation process as user-friendly as it can be, by seeking best practices from other well-regarded museums and other sources.

Another important objective is to set the course for improved physical facilities, so as to consolidate Museum space, to facilitate usage of the collection by researchers and other constituents, to create more of a public face for the Museum and substantially enlarge exhibition space, and to upgrade space in general.

C.
