Job Description
The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology is a research unit on the University of California, Berkeley campus that administers public programs, research, and instructional use of a collection of approximately 3.8 million archaeological and ethnographic objects. Also included in the collection is supporting documentation, including an estimated 500,000 photographs, film, and sound recordings accumulated through systematic research and donations since the museum’s founding in 1902. The museum, accredited by the American Association of Museums, engages in external loans for research and exhibition; development of exhibitions and public programs in the museum’s gallery; conservation research and treatment; and care and maintenance of its vast collections.
Responsibilities
The Development Officer serves as a member of the management team and plays a critical role in strategic decisions on the whole range of institutional issues. The incumbent will plan, organize, and direct large-scale fundraising campaign with multiple components and have a major impact on overall program goals. Responsibilities will include:
- Managing portfolios of donors capable of giving $50K or more within the context of a major capital and endowment campaign
- Maintaining a growing annual fund membership program and manages special events and programs for members
- Establishing a membership structure including corporate memberships, friends groups, and other member groups with common affinities
- Designing and coordinating activities to acknowledge friends of the Museum and to increase their annual gifts
- Soliciting sponsors and underwriters for Museum exhibits, special events, public programs, and other activities
- Maintaining working relationships with local and national press to effectively promote the PAHMA, coordinating with the Office of Media Services, as appropriate
- Researching appropriate foundations and other private agencies that provide grants to cultural arts organizations and crafting proposals to same
- Negotiating and maintaining clearances for solicitations of foundations with University Relations
- Preparing the final package for all grant proposals and working with the Sponsored Projects Office for submission
- Effective and efficient use of budget resources
- Maintaining electronic gift and research records
- May oversee work of professional and/or subordinate staff
- May attend functions, meetings and serve on internal/external committees as a campus representative
Requirements & Qualifications
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations and public relations
- Advanced experience with successful cultural arts or museum fundraising
- Knowledge of current strategies and trends in fundraising, best practices in capital campaign fundraising, major gift solicitation, planned and deferred giving, donor recognition and stewardship, membership, direct mail, telemarketing, and events management
- Advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies and related areas
- Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies
- Advanced skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals/objectives and securing gifts
- Advanced skill to meet predetermined goals and objectives through effective program/project planning, organization, execution and evaluation
- Advanced analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills
- Proven ability to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives
- Demonstrated leadership skills as needed to motivate fund raising volunteers
PREFERRED:
- Training in museum studies, anthropology, history, art history, or other social sciences/humanities preferred
- CFRE preferred
- Advanced knowledge of all aspects of the campus and museum, including relevant issues for the campus, higher education and museums
- Advanced knowledge of the campus and museum including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure
