Job Description

The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is a research unit on the University of California, Berkeley campus that administers public programs, research, and instructional use of a collection of approximately 3.8 million archaeological and ethnographic objects. The Research Division supports multiple research needs including those related to NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) in order to ensure compliance with legal mandates relating to Native American collections and assists in promoting collaborative relationships between tribal groups and the Museum.

The purpose of the position is to conduct research in the museum database and archives to support multiple Museum functions as assigned. Under the supervision of the Research Division Manager, focuses on Archaeological data with emphasis on repatriation claims, following federally mandated procedures and guidelines, using professional museum curatorial practices based upon anthropological and archaeological knowledge. Works within existing databases to ensure that NAGPRA data is verified and accurate. The position requires data entry and the tracking, up-keep, and monitoring of data designed for site-archival review, repatriations, claims, consultation, and other museum functions. The employee will also manage and provide NAGPRA archival review data for the Repatriation Coordinator and Collections managers as needed. He/she may also assist with correspondence, tribal Inventory requests, Notice of Inventory Completion letters, the consultation correspondence database, UCOP contact for repatriation and other relevant requests, paperwork for repatriation, and special requests by Federal agencies for site information as requested. He/she may be asked to assist with research visits and consultations as needed.

Responsibilities

25% General Archaeological Collection Research — as requested by the Research Division Manager for Museum projects such as exhibits, publications or programs.
25% Archival review — work to ascertain the tribal affiliation of Native American objects, identify geographic location of archaeological sites, and identify tribal aboriginal territories. Write reports documenting conclusions. Work with the North American Collections Manager to ensure that objects under review are properly housed.
25% Inventory — as the need arises, assist in the preparation of additional summaries and inventories. Ensure that objects are linked into appropriate groupings, including cross referencing archaeology, osteology and ethnography information. Produce inventory reports, proofing and editing to ensure consistency.
20% Consultation — at request of the Repatriation Coordinator, contact and respond to Native American tribes seeking specific inventories as requested. Ensure that objects requested are correctly identified and museum and/or culturally specific processes are followed. Research and prepare relevant NAGPRA documents for tribal visits. Assist in tribal visits to the Museum, particularly in the Museum’s archives.
5% Supervision/training — responsible for training and supervising researchers and interns to ensure compliance with standard museum curatorial practices, culturally sensitive storage requests and federally mandated NAGPRA procedures.

Requirements & Qualifications
The position requires:
  • Knowledge of museum and UCOP laws, policies and procedures regarding information and collection access with regard to:
    1. Data Integrity
    2. Rights and Reproductions
    3. Repatriation

  • Knowledge of History, Archaeology, and Ethnology of North America with an emphasis on California
  • Knowledge of related laws, museum professional ethics, and trends in relationships and programs
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for working with museum objects and collections documentation
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree highly preferred
  • Technical knowledge regarding data entry and administration standards
  • NAGPRA research parameters

  • Application of specialized knowledge of NAGPRA data parameters to analyze and address inconsistencies in the database
  • Application of general knowledge of the Museum’s database system to assist Museum IS efforts to incorporate relevant Archaeology Collection data into Museum database
  • Application of general knowledge of NAGPRA laws to assist in the research for claims and consultations

  • Technical skills to work in programs such as Excel, Access, FileMaker, the Museum’s database (TMS) and Microsoft Office suite
  • Office skills to handle phone, email, filing, and document duplication

  • Ability to communicate complex concepts verbally and in writing to various audiences
  • Ability to interpret and communicate data to various internal and external audiences
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
