UMAC 2009, 9th International Conference
Putting University Collections to Work in Research and Teaching
September 10–12, 2009
University of California, Berkeley
There is a fundamental difference between collections maintained in Public
Museums and University Collections: the difference is the role of the
archive. In the University, a collection is active, used by the faculty
for research, in the classroom, by groups of students, and by
non-academics. In a University, the space where the collection resides is
not permanent. Research objects are more independent from a formal
location, they are used, and their use changes over time. This is why the
University Collection has a unique culture, history, opportunities, and
challenges.
