The Phoebe Hearst Museum retains all reproduction rights for its photographic images, films, and sound recordings, unless they are already in the public domain. Professional photography or filming in Museum areas may be permitted for a fee, and by arrangement with a minimum of two weeks notice. Photography, for personal use, is permitted within exhibit areas. Research photography of collections can be arranged under certain conditions. Images of Museum objects are available for purchase, and limited permission to publish these images can be requested.
Request for permission to publish, electronically transmit, or publicly display materials supplied by the museum from our archives, must be made on a Permissions Request Form. Permission is granted for one-time use only. Fees charged for commercial reproduction/use are in addition to the cost of photographic production and duplication services. The reproduction rights fee must be paid for each image supplied by the Museum. No reproduction use fees are charged for not-for-profit or scholarly use, as determined by the Museum. An additional letter, detailing the use of the requested image(s), as well as proof of non-profit status, may be required. The Museum requests that, upon publication, one copy of the publication be furnished at no charge.
