Planned Giving

Many of our donors support Phoebe A. Hearst Museum through planned gifts that provide them with personal rewards and financial benefits. Did you know?
  • You can make a gift to Phoebe A. Hearst Museum and receive lifetime income;
  • You can make a gift of your home, receive an immediate income tax charitable deduction, and continue to live there;
  • You have the potential for double tax savings with a gift of appreciated securities;
  • You can support a particular area of interest for generations to come and provide an enduring legacy by creating a named endowment.

Types of Planned Giving:

Establishing an Endowment

An endowment provides a lasting legacy and ensures that Phoebe A. Hearst Museum will continue to be a strong and thriving organization for generations to come. Committed in perpetuity, it provides an annual disbursement of earned income to be used to support an area specifically designated by the donor. Donors have the satisfaction of knowing their gift helps the Hearst achieve greater fiscal independence, especially during difficult economic times. See www.berkeley.planyourlegacy.org/giftplans.php for more information on establishing an endowment.

Charitable Gift Annuity

The charitable gift annuity is simple, affordable, and well-liked. You make a gift to the Hearst Museum via UC Berkeley and in return, the university agrees to make fixed payments to you for life. See www.berkeley.planyourlegacy.org/giftplans.php for more information.

Bequest

Bequests are gifts made by will or trust and are the most common form of planned giving. Whether you wish to provide general operating income or support a specific department or program at the Museum, your bequest expresses your lasting commitment to Phoebe A. Hearst Museum. See www.berkeley.planyourlegacy.org/giftplans.php for more information on bequests.

Gifts of Art

In addition to outright gifts, the Hearst welcomes bequests and promised gifts of art. Indeed, the Museum’s vast collection of 3,000,000 ethnographic and archeological objects is comprised of donations from our many patrons. The Museum gives serious consideration before it accepts gifts of art to ensure that the objects enrich the collection and to ensure that the Museum has the resources to properly care for the object. Potential gifts are reviewed by an acquisition committee. See www.berkeley.planyourlegacy.org/giftplans.php for more information.

Gifts of Property

Donating real estate is a wonderful way to support the Museum’s mission. Proceeds from the sale of property can be directed to an endowment, a donor-specified project or acquisition, or used under the discretion of the director or a named staff member. Whether you wish to pledge your home to the Museum and continue to maintain residency, or sell your property outright, the Museum can help you make all of the necessary arrangements for a simple and straightforward transaction. The Museum also accepts other tangible goods for use onsite or to be sold to benefit programs. See www.berkeley.planyourlegacy.org/giftplans.php for more information.
