Clothing and Textiles

One of the great art forms of Rajasthan is its richly decorated textiles and brilliantly-colored clothing.  These are traditionally hand-woven by professional caste specialists in villages; some are also produced on commission for courts and industrially.  Entire villages may specialize in the craft, where almost every home has a loom.  Although some textiles are woven with colored threads, many—perhaps most—textiles are woven in plain white fabric and then dyed or otherwise decorated.  Generally, there are separate caste families for weaving and for dying and block-printing.  Some techniques, such as embroidery, are often done by women for their family’s own use.
