Giant's mask (máscara de gigante)
Zoque Indians; Rayón, Chiapas Made by Félix López, ca. 1945 Collected by Norman D. Thomas, 1965 3-16509
This is one of up to three giant's masks that are used in the Dance of the Giants (Baile de Gigante). Held during carnival time, this dance dramatizes the story of David and Goliath. Goliath, who carries a wooden machete, repeatedly charges the audience and frightens the children. On the top of their heads, above their masks, the giant dancers wear the skins of rams with the horns attached.
