In addition to decorative objects made for sale, gourds in Mexico are often used for everyday purposes. Although plastic containers have replaced gourds in many areas, some people still prefer to carry water in a gourd because they say that gourds keep it cooler and better-tasting. The leather strap was added for carrying and for hanging the gourd from the house wall.
