Model hat (sombrero de plata)
Mexico, unspecified; early 20th century Collected by Francisco Mújica, before 1979 3-27945
Hardly anything is known about this striking piece. In the 1930s the craft of Mexican silver was revived in Taxco, Guerrero, by the American expatriate artist William Spratling. The sombrero was probably made for tourists, as the hat form was a popular icon of Mexican identity for Anglos in the years between the two World Wars. The nationalistic function of the piece is underlined by the phrase "Viva Mexico," coupled with the motif of the national emblem, the eagle and snake on a cactus, represented on the country's flag and coins.
