Female figure puppet, holding an umbrella
Ibibio; Nigeria Collected by William R. Bascom, 1944 5-11689a,b
The Ibibio had highly developed customs of public puppet plays, performed by various ceremonial societies during festivals. These offered satiric commentaries on everyday affairs. The puppets themselves were fairly realistic and often quite elaborate. This one has movable arms and carries a detachable umbrella in one hand.
