Painting a mural for family planning
Naiwadia Village, Sitapur District, Uttar Pradesh. December 26, 1969.
During the 1960s the Indian government carried out an aggressive policy of family planning. Because of heavy child mortality, Indian families were traditionally quite large in order to ensure the survival of sons who could support their parents. Here a professional sign painter paints the side of the health services building used by visiting medical teams. The large red triangle is the symbol of the movement.

Poster propagating planned parenthood. The design depicts the "ideal" Indian family: father, mother, and two children. Collected by Richard Lerner. 9-11445.
