A barber shaving Baljit Singh
Choonsa, Muzaffarnagar District, Uttar Pradesh. March 4, 1970.

Barbers in Indian cities often ply their trade on the streets. For just a few pennies, the poor may get a haircut or a shave with a straight razor. In rural villages such as Choonsa, barbers also perform a variety of ceremonial duties. Male and female barbers help prepare the bride and groom for the marriage ceremony, assist with the wedding feasts, and also carry messages.
