Butcher cutting meat
Richard Lerner's home, Court Road, Old Delhi. Mid-June, 1969.
Although meat is forbidden to observant Hindus, it is widely eaten by Muslims. Goat, called mutton by the British in India, is the most popular meat in the country. This vendor traveled around on his bicycle. He carried his meat in a box on the rear, screened to keep away flies. The butcher would cut off whatever the customer wanted. If someone requested mincemeat, he used his cleaver and a small wooden block. Like many itinerant vendors, he weighed his goods with a portable balance scale.
