Hookah vendor
Dal Gate Bazaar, Srinagar, Kashmir. July 12, 1969.
Water pipes are used in many parts of Asia and Africa for smoking tobacco and hashish. A hookah consists of four parts: a small bowl to contain the tobacco, a base bowl filled with water, a flexible tube, and a mouthpiece. The base bowl, which cools and purifies the smoke before it is inhaled, may be made of metal or coconut shell, but clay is perhaps the most common material in India. At this shop, Lerner bought a plain one belonging to the shopkeeper (center rear). Here one can see how the vendor arranges similar items for his customers.
