Making a wheel for a bullock cart
Naiwadia Village, Sitapur District, Uttar Pradesh. February 20, 1970.
Carts pulled by bullocks or oxen were the major form of transportation in villages. According to Richard Lerner "no one in that village had a bicycle; most of the roads were not fit for bicycles." This artisan, who was a specialized carpenter, probably made the whole cart, in addition to the wheels. Lerner took this picture "because it was of interest, visually," and to note that they had other skills in the village besides farming.
