Ghasi Ram spinning rope
Naiwadia Village, Sitapur District, Uttar Pradesh. February 17, 1970.

In this isolated village people continued to make their own rope and cord. This man is using a wooden frame, like a large spindle whorl for spinning thread. Ghasi Ram, who owned about six acres of farmland, was about fifty-five years old when this photo was taken. See the nearby case for an example of a rope spinner.
