Adz, hafted stone
Western New Guinea (Irian Jaya, Indonesia), Central Highlands; Grand Valley Dani. Collected by Karl G. Heider, 1970, acc. 1972.
11–41094

The Dani were made famous by the film Dead Birds, produced by Robert Gardner in cooperation with Karl Heider. This adz is a general tool, used almost exclusively by men for chopping down trees, shaping things such as digging sticks, smoothing planks, or breaking pig bones during butchering. The stones were traded to the Dani and then finished locally. A natural tree branch served as a handle.
