This is one of a set of six puppets from a Taoist puppet show, collected with the cooperation of a temple of Taoist monks. The monks used popular stories to help communicate their faith to the common folk. This figure represents Hsüan Tsang or Tripitaka, a Chinese pilgrim to India in the 7th century A.D. His story was popularized in the novel Monkey, also known as Journey to the West.
