Farmers of the Izumo area used such bowls to drink a special type of tea known as bote-bote. It was made of a mixture of tea leaves and dried tea flowers over which hot water was poured and whipped to a froth with a whisk. Rice, beans, miso, and pickles were then added and eaten. This style of drinking tea, peculiar to Izumo Province, was encouraged by the Lord of that domain.
