Stools are used by Yoruba novitiates during the initiation rites for several cults. This one is for Iroko, a deity who makes peace when Eshu, the trickster and divine messenger, causes a fight. The priestess in the center holds the sacrificial knife in her right hand, and with the other she holds the hand of a novitiate. Her assistant, a drummer, is seated at the left, and above are two pythons supporting the seat.
