Back ornament for boy's puberty rite, macaw feathers
Peru, Madra de Dios drainage; Amarakéri
Collected by Harold M. Davis, 1961.
16-9317
Davis, who felt that these back ornaments were "the prize of the collection," reported that they were "almost unattainable because the people value them so highly they are not willing to sell them." The boys spend years collecting the 45-50 of the macaw's longest tail feathers that are needed. Arranged in an arc, they are worn over the shoulder as a back ornament during the puberty rites.
