Building on the earlier collections of Gustavus Eisen, Lila O'Neale conducted important field research on Guatemalan textiles. She did no systematic collecting, but she did acquire a few items for the UC Decorative Art department, in which she served as professor. In 1974, department's entire collection, especially strong in textiles, was transferred to the Hearst Museum.
