"Village Cove and Lagoon, Saint Paul's Island"
Watercolor by Henry W. Elliott (1846-1930), 1873, donated 1917.
17-226

The village of Saint Paul was the principal settlement of the Pribiloff Islands, Alaska, where Elliott worked as a U.S. Assistant Treasury Agent, 1872-74. Dedicated to saving the fur seal from extinction, he recorded their commercial slaughter in his paintings. As a self-trained artist, Elliott was largely motivated by a documentary interest, as seen in the extensive annotations on his watercolors.
