Woman's dress hat, basketry
Humboldt County; Yurok
Collected by Alfred L. Kroeber, 1901.
1-1610
In a pioneering study, graduate student Lila O'Neale traveled to the Klamath River region in 1929 to interview basket weavers. Using photographs of the earlier collection of Philip M. Jones and Alfred Kroeber, she elicited a substantial body of aesthetic commentary on what was considered good form and weaving skills. The Z-designs in the flint patterns on this cap were criticized as having been copied from a newspaper.
