Silver-working was a relatively late craft among Southwestern Indians. The Navajo first learned to work the material from the Mexicans about 1870, and derived many of their shapes and motifs from Mexican forms. Around 1900, the Navajo began to create items expressly for sale to tourists. Although Phoebe Hearst owned this jewelry personally, it is not known whether she ever wore any of it.
