Chinese Folk Culture

In 1998, Ilse M. Fang donated 170 Chinese items that she had collected during her doctoral research in folklore and ethnography. Following three years in Canton in the 1930s, she returned to China in the early 1940s. Between 1941 and 1946, she was able to find many fine, traditional items in flea markets and antique shops in Beijing. The collection includes clothing and accessories; ivory, wood and lacquer objects; various kinds of paper items; printing and writing; games; and festival and ritual objects. Much of the collection is from the turn-of-the-century, or early 20th century; some dates to the later years of the Manchu or Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). This selection focuses on the fine embroidery done by women of all ranks and classes.
