Indonesia

Although the museum has some fine objects from Bali and Java, many made for tourists, its most important collection from Indonesia was gathered by UC graduate student Nancy Makepeace Tanner. Tanner went to the Minangkabau of western Sumatra in order to study a society that was both matrilineal and Islamic. Like many students at the time, she was able to make a valuable collection even though not specifically studying material culture. With Rivai Sjarif, a member of her adopted Minangkabau family, she obtained over 360 objects during 1965-66; accessioned in 1966.
