Japan

Like many of the museum's Asian holdings, those from Japan are enriched from a collection of the university's Department of Decorative Art, which was transferred to the Hearst Museum in 1974. Two of the major Japanese collectors were George Kerr, who gathered folk pottery in Japan and Taiwan, and Albert M. Bender, a San Francisco insurance executive and art patron. These are complement by an important field collection gathered in Kyoto and surrounding countryside by Brian Shekeloff, a former museum artist. Shekeloff's collection of 252 domestic and agricultural items is especially rich in the kinds of objects that had been in daily use, rather than in the decorative or fine arts more commonly found in museums.
