The Indian collection is the most important of the Museum's holdings from Asia. Most of it was collected in the field from 1969 to 1972 by three graduate students: Richard Lerner, Ronald Maduro, and Niloufer Ichaporia. Students of David Mandelbaum and Gerald Berreman, their collecting was funded by the Thomas Jr. Ready Fund. Lerner made a large collection of objects of daily life from agricultural villages of northern India, Maduro studied creativity among the painters of Rajasthan, and Ichaporia, of Indian descent, collected among her Parsi community before writing her dissertation on the market for ethnic crafts
