Ecuador: The Michael Harner Collection
Graduate student Michael J. Harner, who had spent part of his childhood in South America, decided to study the culture of the Shuar (popularly known as the Jívaro) because of the confusing and sensational information about them. Living in the tropical forests of eastern Ecuador, the Shuar were famed for their head-hunting and production of shrunken heads. With the exception of the dart quiver (which was collected in 1962 and accessioned in 1964), all the items here were collected by Harner in 1957.
