The U.S. acquisition of Trust Territories in the Pacific following World War II stimulated a great deal of anthropological activity. Museum director Edward Gifford conducted archaeological expeditions in Fiji and New Caledonia. This section also presents two related collections made on the island of Pohnpei (then called Ponape). In 1946 William Bascom (a professor at Northwestern and later the museum's director) conducted survey research for the U.S. government. The following year UC graduate student Saul Riesenberg was sent to continue his work.
