Here are displayed several items from the later millennia of Egyptian history: the New Kingdom (Dynasties 18-20, ca. 1570-1070 B.C.) and the Third Intermediate Period (Dynasties 21-25, ca. 1070-664 B.C.). Three of these objects come from the first dynasty of the New Kingdom, when the Canaanite rulers (known as Hyksos) were overthrown. During the 1900 and 1901 field seasons, Reisner excavated a large royal place, a settlement, and a series of cemeteries at Deir el Ballas, dating principally to the early New Kingdom. The Third Intermediate Period, like the previous two, was a time of disunity and decentralized power. At the same time, however, the major arts experienced a revival, with a strong archaizing influence.
