The Phoebe Hearst Museum retains all reproduction rights for its photographic images, films, and sound recordings, unless they are already in the public domain. Photography within exhibit areas for personal use is permitted. Research photography of collections can be arranged under certain conditions. Images of Museum objects are available for purchase, and limited permission to publish these images can be requested. Professional photography or filming in Museum areas may be permitted for a fee, and by arrangement with a minimum of two weeks notice.
Please place orders well in advance and allow four to six weeks for each order. Museum personnel will search the media archives for all reasonable requests. Service charges may be added for requests that require extensive research time or for rush orders, if accepted. Service charges may be added for photographic work that requires: moving objects from storage, special handling and/or conservation, working to detailed technical specifications, a special camera set-up, or special-handling of archival photographic material.
An itemized invoice will be sent separately from the University Accounting Office referencing the Hearst Museum. Payment is required upon receipt of invoice, and made payable to the "Regents of the University of California."
Please see the Rights and Reproduction page for information regarding requests for permission to publish and for reproduction/use rights policies and forms.
Credit must be given whenever a Museum photograph is reproduced. Credit should be given to the photographer, when identified. The credit must read: "Courtesy of the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology and the Regents of the University of California photographed by (name), (catalogue number)." The Museum reserves all rights to its photographic images.
