Volunteer at the Hearst Museum!

The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology recognizes the valuable contributions made by volunteers toward its mission of preservation, interpretation, research, and understanding of its collections. It acknowledges the multi-talented individuals of the Bay Area and supports their commitment to share their time, skills, and knowledge in support of the Museum's work.

If you are a currently enrolled U.C. Berkeley undergraduate, you are also eligible to participate in the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP).

Goals of the Volunteer Program

The volunteering program at the Museum advances the following goals:

  • To match responsible volunteers with staff members in order to implement the Museum's mission.
  • To support the efforts of volunteers to contribute and expand their knowledge and skills.
  • To advance the recognition and support of the Museum through volunteerism.

Placement in Museum Departments

The Museum accepts volunteers in most aspects of museum work. Volunteers have been placed in departments including exhibitions, education and public programs, conservation, registration, collections management, the photo lab, and research.

All volunteer work is carried out under the direction of a supervising staff member. Written descriptions of volunteer jobs are posted here. We are eager to match each volunteer with a suitable job. However, we cannot always guarantee placement in a particular area or at a particular time. This may mean a waiting period between the time of the volunteer's application and when a project is available.

Time Commitments

Although there are many volunteer positions related to projects with ending dates, there are some ongoing tasks, such as data entry and cataloging. Time commitments for volunteers can vary according to a project's requirements. Special events, such as public programs, may require flexible use of a volunteer's time.

Application

Volunteer application forms are available for download or from the Museum's Administrative Office in 103 Kroeber Hall. Forms should be submitted with resumes when possible.

Please contact the Museum at pahma-programs@berkeley.edu if you have any questions. Thank you!

Museum volunteer hours are 9–5, Monday through Friday.
