Photographic and Media Reproduction Services
The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology retains all reproduction rights for its photographic images, films, and sound recordings unless they are already in the public domain. Images of Museum objects are available for purchase, and limited permission to publish these images can be requested from the Media Collections Manager. Research photography of collections can be arranged under certain conditions. Photography is permitted in galleries for personal, non-commercial use only. Professional photography or filming in Museum areas may be permitted for a fee, and by arrangement with a minimum of two weeks notice.
Production Services for Photographs
The Museum offers 24-bit TIFF, RGB-formatted digital image files. The fee for a high-quality image suitable for publication, typically at 300 dpi, is $25.00.
Not all objects in the collection are represented in the photo archives. If reproduction quality images are not available, it may be possible to arrange for special photography by the staff photographer. Additional turnaround and fee of $75.00 will apply. This charge is determined, in part, by the amount of time required to produce the image.
Additionally, tax, mailing and handling will be charged.
Sound Recordings and Moving Image Duplication Services
Fees for duplication of Sound Recording and Moving Images will be charged on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the service fees, tax, mailing and handling will also be charged.
Sound recording duplication onto audio cassette tape:
Fee for existing digital audio is $25.00 per CD; fees for undigitized audio are available upon request.
Moving image duplication:
Fees for moving image duplication are available upon request.
Payment and Delivery
Please place orders well in advance and allow four to six weeks for each order. Museum personnel will search the media archives for all reasonable requests. Service charges may be added for requests that require extensive research time or for rush orders, if accepted, and for photographic work that requires: moving objects from storage, special handling and/or conservation, working to detailed technical specifications, a special camera set-up, or special-handling of archival photographic material.
An itemized invoice will be sent upon receipt of a written request with description of the intended use. Payment is required upon receipt of invoice; it should be made payable to the "Regents of the University of California."
Orders to be shipped within the U.S. are sent via USPS. Mailing and handling fees are $10.00 per order.

Please see the Rights and Reproduction page for information regarding requests for permission to publish and for reproduction/use rights policies and forms.
